KAC were commissioned by Swale Borough Council to develop a programme of stakeholder engagement linked to an architectural competition for a new Sure Start facility in Sheerness. We ran a series of focus groups with service providers and users prior to developing the brief for a combined Children’s Centre and GP Surgery. Three firms of architects were invited to participate in a limited competition which included a Design Ideas Day at which drawings produced in workshops with local primary schools were displayed to stimulate discussion between the community and architects. The winning design by Architype includes welcoming, accessible spaces to encourage social interaction within an innovative low energy shell. The building, known as Seashells, opened in 2005. http://www.sheerness.surestart.org
